Lacryma Christi is surely the most representative wine of the Vesuvian area. The volcanic soils rich of brooms, prickly pears and maritime pines, make the area particularly suitable for the production of this wine, famous all over the world and already known since the Roman times. It has also been defined as the peasant's wine par excellence, since every inhabitant of the Vesuvian areas produced it by himself to keep a good supply throughout the year. The first to produce it in a more "serious" way were the monks, whose convent stood on the slopes of Vesuvius. It seems that later the Jesuit Fathers, owners of vast lands in those localities, were almost exclusive producers and holders of this precious artisanal wine.
